New and Emerging technologies.

During this topic we will focus how new technologies shape and change the world that we live in. We will have a detailed look at automation and how modern day manufacturing works.

Energy Generation and storage

We will also look at how innovation can drive product development. 

Students will become reflective on modern issues and contemplate questions such as the advantages of machines over humans.

Textiles Materials

Students will produce textiles products that will link into core learning about woven and non-woven fabrics and manufacturing techniques.

Social, Moral, Spiritual & Cultural and British Values Links

    • Group work,
    • Ethics of sustainable energy,
    • Looking at designs of other cultures. 

 

Careers, Advice, Information & Guidance Links

    • Careers in the textiles industry

  • Smart materials.

During this term our focus shift to being creative

We will study new materials and how smart materials can enhance even the simplest design.

We will look at sketching and presentation skills, the students will develop both hand drawn and Computer generated ideas

Students will produce Wood and plastic based products that will link into core learning about these materials. Harwood soft wood manufactured boards

We will develop practical skills in these areas as well and adding to back ground knowledge.

We will also look at the impact of plastics and their characteristics.

  • Metal properties
  • Systems and control

This term we will focus on more technical aspects of design technology.

This will include some study of basic mechanisms, types of motion.

Designing and fabricating metal products. All students will do some casting and welding.

Students will produce Metal based products that will link into core learning about these materials. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Basic electronics and how systems shape our modern world.

Produce some simple electronic circuit and the core learning associated with them.

Year 10 Product design Summary

Product Design – Design Technology is a going to be an exciting year.

In year 10 we will be focusing on all the Core learning, we will study a number of existing designers and the work of others. We will explore new and amazing technologies but also develop our own personal skills with tools and equipment.

We will be creative and think about how designs become classic. We will create products in a number of material areas such as Textiles, Wood, Metal, Plastic and electronics.

The year will be fast paced, jam packed with new topics and interesting projects.
