Studying Core PE at KS4
Students in Year 10 have 3 Core PE lessons across the 2 week timetable. Students in Year 11 have 2 Core PE lessons across the 2 week timetable.
Students in Year 10 and 11 select option routes of boys, girls or mixed based on their choice of activities they wish to participate in.
Studying PE Cambridge National in Sport Studies at KS4
Students who select the Cambridge National in Sports Studies have 3 lessons per week.
The course is assessed in a combination of ways including coursework, exam, practical performance and leadership based.
Students complete a unit on Contemporary Issues in Sport. By completing this unit they will understand a range of topical and contemporary issues in sport, including learning about participation levels and barriers to completing sporting activities. They will also learn how participation is impacted by the promotion of values and ethical behaviour, about the role of high-profile sporting events, the role of national governing bodies and how technology is used in within sport. This is totally exam based assessment.
Students will complete a unit on Media in Sport. In this unit they will understand the different sides of a range of media sources and apply real life examples to show the nature of the relationship between media and sport. They will also learn how rapid development in technology is enabling sport to be viewed, replayed and discussed whenever and wherever the spectator wants. They will then develop your ability to evaluate and interpret the different ways in which sport is represented by the media. This is coursework based assessments.
Students will complete a unit on Performance and Leadership in Sport. In this unit they will have an opportunity to develop their skills both as a performer in two different sporting activities, and as a leader, developing a range of transferable skills. They will work both independently and as part of a team, including communicating with team mates as well as being in front of an audience when they perform. They will perform under pressure, both as a participant and as a leader, and will use their initiative to solve problems and make decisions. Finally, they will deal with rapidly changing conditions and situations. This will be assessed via witness statements written by their teacher for their performance and leadership assessments. In both performing and leading they will write two evaluative coursework pieces.
Career pathways in PE
Students can then continue studying PE at college through the Cambridge Technical Qualification, Level 3 BTEC in Sport or A Level PE. Then at university with a variety of differing sports and physical education courses.
